Intelligent Mail Barcode Explained: Every IMb Field Decoded

If your team runs regulated print and mail, you already know a wrong barcode is more than a cosmetic problem. It can bump a mailing out of automation prices, break your address-correction feedback, and post errors to your USPS scorecard that finance and compliance both notice. The Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb) is where that risk lives, and where the controls that prevent it live too.

The IMb packs mailpiece identity, tracking, and routing into a single barcode. Read it correctly and you know who mailed a piece, what services were requested, where it is heading, and how to track it through the mailstream. What the IMb replaced, and why it matters

Before the IMb came along, mailers printed POSTNET for routing and a separate PLANET Code for tracking. The IMb rolls data from both into one symbol and adds service and identity information along the way. The Intelligent Mail barcode lets mailers use a single barcode to participate in multiple Postal Service programs simultaneously and expands their ability to track individual mailpieces.

If you look at the barcode itself, the IMb is a 65-bar barcode. Each bar takes one of four states (full, ascender, tracker, or descender), which is why you will also hear it called the 4-State Customer Barcode. Those 65 bars encode 31 decimal digits split into a 20-digit tracking code and an 11-digit routing code, as documented in the Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMb) 4-State Specification.

Here is what that means for your budget: a correct IMb gets you automation prices, and a correct Full-Service IMb adds free tracking and free address correction on top. This barcode is not paperwork. It is the thing that controls your postage rate and your visibility into the mailstream.

Decoding the IMb field by field

Let’s look at how the IMb’s 20-digit tracking code is structured. It has four fields, followed by an optional routing code. Here is a sample string, 00 300 123456 000000001, broken down by field:

Quick note: the Mailer ID and Serial Number always total 15 digits. A 6-digit MID pairs with a 9-digit serial, and vice versa. The routing code length determines how deep the Postal Service can sort the piece, and a delivery-point routing code (11 digits) that matches the address is what qualifies a letter for automation prices.

What Full-Service IMb actually requires

Full-Service is a higher tier of IMb compliance, and it is the gate to the best pricing and free tracking data. But just printing a barcode on the piece does not get you there. To qualify, your mailing has to meet three requirements.

The tracking data the IMb unlocks

The Serial Number identifies the individual piece, and the STID tells the Postal Service which feedback and services to attach. Together, they turn a physical envelope into a trackable record.

If you sit on the compliance side, that last stream is the one to watch. Fewer physical pieces bounce back with protected information on them, and you get a documented trail showing how your mailing list stays current.

Governance at scale: MID and CRID

Once you hit enterprise volume, MID and serialization become a governance problem, not just a printing detail. When you are mailing millions of pieces across many campaigns and mail owners, the real risk is a serialization collision: the same MID and serial reused inside the rolling window on two different jobs.

Those collisions show up on the USPS Mailer Scorecard as Full-Service verification failures, and sustained errors above USPS thresholds can trigger assessments. That is why serial ranges need to be assigned and tracked centrally rather than left to individual jobs or vendors.

There is also the question of who owns the MID. USPS assigns a 6-digit MID to high-volume mailers and a 9-digit MID to lower-volume mailers, and ownership can sit with the mail owner, the mail service provider, or another party in the supply chain. That flexibility is great, but someone still has to keep serial ranges from overlapping. How long does IMb serial number uniqueness have to be maintained?

USPS requires you to keep each Intelligent Mail barcode serial number unique across a rolling window so the same number does not get reused too soon. Mailings under 10,000 pieces have some alternative options, but at volume you really need centrally managed serial ranges that never overlap between jobs.

What does the Service Type ID control in the IMb?
